The Munros

Sir Hugh Munro published his Tables of peaks over 3,000 ft in 1891. The modern list stands at 282, from accessible Ben Lomond to the Cuillin's Inaccessible Pinnacle — the only Munro that demands a rock climb.

CRITERIA — Separate mountains of 914.4 m (3,000 ft) and over, per the SMC Tables

On completing the Munros

Start in the south

Ben Lomond, Schiehallion and the Lawers range are forgiving introductions with clear paths. Leave Knoydart, Fisherfield and the Cuillin until you are fit and practised.

Weather rules everything

Scottish 3,000-footers are a different proposition in cloud. Learn to navigate on a bearing, and treat a forecast of 60 mph gusts as a rest day.

The In Pinn last, or early

The Inaccessible Pinnacle needs a rope and a dry day. Some save it for a guided finale; others clear it early so it stops looming over the whole round.
